Empowering Community Resilience: Collaborating with Pūtiki Emergency Response Group

At The Survival Co, we believe that community engagement is not just a buzzword, but a fundamental responsibility for any organisation. Our recent participation in the Pūtiki Emergency Response Group (PERG) hui is testament to our commitment to actively contribute to meaningful conversations about natural hazard, climate change risks, and the need for communities to be prepared.

Pūtiki Emergency Response Group (PERG)

PERG are making significant strides in the Whanganui region. PERG is a community-driven initiative established to address the urgent need for a specific emergency response and evacuation plan in the Whanganui region. A need exists because in a Whanganui River flood event, the entire flood plain is affected, and therefore Whanganui District Council’s CDEM response is stretched over a vast area. PERG's aim is to enhance and cooperate with the existing disaster response by leveraging local expertise and principles to ensure the safety and well-being of the Pūtiki community.

Taking Part in the PERG Hui

We had the privilege of taking part in the PERG hui, where community members, along with the Whanganui District Council's emergency response team, gathered to discuss the revised Civil Defence Emergency Management Plan for Pūtiki. The hui was organised to gather insights for the revised community-driven Civil Defence Emergency Management Plan for Pūtiki. The dialogue was spearheaded by PERG. The Survival Co. were there to discuss the essentials of an emergency survival kit and how the local community could assemble their own.

The Importance of Community Involvement

Community engagement lies at the heart of effective disaster management strategies. Recognising this, we are committed to actively engaging with communities to better understand their needs and concerns. We firmly believe that by fostering open and transparent dialogue, we can collectively develop comprehensive emergency response plans that address the unique challenges faced by each community.

Supporting Community Efforts

We are honoured to be working alongside PERG to determine how we can support this community effort by providing the necessary equipment and resources.

As The Survival Co. continues to prioritise community engagement, events like the PERG hui serve as crucial platforms for us to actively participate in meaningful conversations about natural hazards and climate change risks. By working hand in hand with community-driven initiatives like PERG, we can collectively develop comprehensive emergency response plans that ensure the safety and well-being of communities like Pūtiki. We are committed to supporting these efforts by providing the necessary equipment and resources, and we look forward to future collaborations that empower communities and foster resilience in the face of challenges posed by natural hazards and climate risk.
